450 years of Leiden University, a milestone in science and innovation
On February 7, 2025, Leiden University celebrated its 450th anniversary, a milestone that underscored its position as the oldest university in the Netherlands. Celebration of the lustrum
The theme of the anniversary, "The Time Ahead," reflected the university's ongoing commitment to progress and social engagement. The anniversary year was marked by various events and activities that highlighted the university's rich tradition and vision for the future.
On February 7, 2025, the official Dies Natalis took place at the Pieterskerk in Leiden. During this celebration, honorary doctorates were awarded, and performances were given by, among others, science rapper Jon Chase and singer Celesta da Vinci.
International astronomers gather in Leiden
At the end of March 2025, Leiden will welcome 500 astronomers from around the world. During this event, the first public data from the Euclid telescope will be presented, a groundbreaking space project in which Leiden scientists play a key role. In addition to scientific sessions, there will also be activities for the public and schools, making the university’s knowledge and discoveries accessible to a wider audience.
