On October 4, 2023, the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam, the Afrika Museum in Berg en Dal, and the Volkenkunde Museum in Leiden announced their continued collaboration under the shared name 'Wereldmuseum' (World Museum). The new name for the Volkenkunde Museum has emerged from the developments the museum has undergone in recent years. Wereldmuseum, as the overarching organization of these museums, explores what it means to be human, our relationship with the world around us, and how people interact with each other. The new logo features handwritten letters W and M forming a human figure, capable of variation to represent infinite diversity, mirroring the essence of humanity itself.
Marieke van Bommel, the CEO, emphasized Wereldmuseum's aspiration for a shared world where everyone influences each other. The organization aims to foster understanding, compassion, and empathy, contributing to a more just world.
Decolonization
Decolonization has been a focal point for Wereldmuseum Leiden in the past 10 years. This includes ongoing research into the origins of museum objects, conducted in collaboration with other museums, the government, and universities. In July 2023, 486 objects were returned to Indonesia as part of the restitution efforts.
'Restitution for us is about more than just returning objects. It involves taking responsibility for our own history, acknowledging injustice, and finding a path to restoration. It's also about respecting others with whom we share the planet and envisioning a collective future,' stated Van Bommel.
Upcoming projects for Wereldmuseum
Looking ahead, the museums under the collective name have exciting projects for the upcoming year. Wereldmuseum Leiden will present contemporary art from Africa, reflecting on topics such as cultural heritage, migration, and decolonization. The shift in approach within the art world is an exciting development that Wereldmuseum Leiden hopes to share with the Leiden community.
