The Values of Language(s) in the Ancient World
The Penn-Leiden Colloquium on Ancient Values XIII, held from 12 to 14 June 2025 at Leiden University, focuses on ‘The Values of Language(s) in the Ancient World’ and examines how the Greeks and Romans valued language, language diversity and its socio-cultural impact.
Leiden University is organising the 13th Penn-Leiden Colloquium on Ancient Values from 12-14 June 2025, with the theme ‘The Values of Language in Antiquity.’ This conference offers researchers an opportunity to explore the importance of language in ancient Greek and Roman societies and how it influenced social and cultural attitudes.
The colloquium will address questions on the values of Greek and Latin terms, and lingua, as well as views on bilingualism and multilingualism. This event celebrates the 25th anniversary of the colloquium and honours Prof Ineke Sluiter, a leading researcher in language studies. Researchers are invited to submit a 300-word abstract by 1 October 2024. Selected papers will be considered for publication at De Gruyter Brill.
