Why is Leiden the National Education City 2025?
Leiden was chosen as National Education City 2025 because of its rich tradition in education, science and innovation. As a city of knowledge, Leiden is a centre for collaboration and innovation, with a strong focus on inclusivity, sustainability and digital education innovations. The city offers a broad network of educational institutions that promote talent development and provides an inclusive learning environment where all students have the opportunity to grow. In 2025, Leiden will host events that expound these values, with a particular focus on strengthening education in the region.

Leiden will be National Education City for a year from 1 January 2025. The National Education Week Foundation, the LEF, Leiden Knowledge City and the municipality of Leiden are joining forces to make the power of Leiden education visible for a year.

The National Teaching Talents 2024 were announced during National Education Week. Martin Schilder won in primary education for his board game ‘Leesbeesten’ and Ingrid Kuiken was awarded in secondary education for her work with artificial intelligence in the classroom. This recognition highlights the innovative contributions of young education professionals to the Dutch education system.
