Leiden European City of Science 2022 was a 365-day science festival packed with activities, lectures, workshops, excursions, exhibitions, and events, for anyone with a curious mind.

365 Days
Leiden was the European City of Science in 2022. Throughout the year, there was something to do in the city in 365-day long programme for anyone with a curious mind. The year was organized together with numerous national and international partners to connect science and society. Anyone was able to participate, from leading international scientists to curious kids — as well as artists, companies, students, community centres and museums.
Who Knows
The theme of Leiden2022 was “Who Knows”. This reflects the current zeitgeist, in which opportunism and deepfakes gnaw at scientific integrity and truth-finding. “Who Knows” is about who owns knowledge nowadays? Who determines what is true, and who knows what the future will look like?
From Local to International
In 2022, Leiden showed Europe that it is truly a city of science. This was done through local initiatives with international appeal. For example, alongside scientific conferences, 101 neighbourhoods that took part in Leiden2022. The program also offered a different subject every day, such as bats, hiccups, diabetes, and artificial intelligence. Everything and anything had been explored.
EuroScience Open Forum
In 2022, Leiden hosted the 10th edition of the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF). ESOF is Europe's largest multidisciplinary scientific conference. The conference aimed to deliver stimulating content and lively debated around the latest advancements and discoveries in sciences, humanities and social sciences. ESOF brought everyone from leading scientists, early career researchers, business people, policy makers, science and technology communicator to the general public together to find out more about how science is helping us advance today.
